Bruce Kroken
Bruce Kroken was a member of the ACB for 24 years and was a founding member of the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra. He believed music is a source of life-long enjoyment. We pay tribute to our great friend by providing this scholarship in his name.
The Bruce Kroken Memorial Scholarship
The Bruce Kroken Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually by the Albuquerque Concert Band to encourage band students to continue their involvement in instrumental music performance at the college level. This $1000 prize honors the memory of Bruce Kroken who was a long time member and conductor of the ACB as well as was Director of Bands at both Manzano HS and Desert Ridge MS. The recipient shall present a solo performance at the April concert of the Albuquerque Concert Band. A $1000 award is given to one student, although additional scholarships in lesser amounts may also be awarded.
Applicants for this scholarship must be active band members in the Albuquerque metropolitan area who are graduating seniors and planning to continue in music during their college years. Also eligible are graduates of Albuquerque metropolitan area high schools planning continuing participation in a performance ensemble at a New Mexico school of higher education. The college music involvement need not be as a Major in music, but the recipient must enroll in a performing instrumental group for the subsequent academic year.
The award will be based on an audition and a brief interview. The applicant must perform on a traditional band instrument. The solo selection must be approved by the ACB Music Director. While the piece would preferably be accompanied by the ACB, it may be unaccompanied or accompanied by piano (arrangements for the pianist are the responsibility of the recipient). This can be the solo selection that the student will perform at Solo/Ensemble Festival.
The solo performance will be on the concert of Sunday, April 7, 2013, 3:00 PM at the Eldorado High School PAC.
We would suggest that this be a work that the student will perform at Solo/Ensemble Festival with piano accompaniment. The Albuquerque Concert Band will obtain the music for accompaniment at the end of the audition/interview process once a soloist has been selected. It would help greatly if the solo/band material is available in your school's band library or in the Albuquerque Concert Band Library.
